The General Assembly The General Assembly, 29 S Wharf Promenade, South Wharf VIC 3006, Australia

Situated amidst Melbourne’s prominent dining scene at South Wharf, The General Assembly is a spacious feasting and drinking venue by the Matilda Bay Brewing Company. The entrepreneurial beer collective has already made its mark in Melbourne, and the expansion provides an opportunity for new punters to indulge in the group’s famed beer and cider portfolio. Coupled with a bold restaurant menu at lunch and dinner time, a Fat Yak never looked so good.

Matilda Bay Brewing Company was born in 1984 in Western Australia. It was established by a group of young entrepreneurs who were dissatisfied with the one-dimensional beer on offer in Australia, and therefore wanted to create a new, exciting portfolio of craft beers and ciders. They started their mission in the Sail & Anchor Hotel in Freemantle, before expanding to Melbourne. They took over an old Cadbury’s factory in Bertie St Port Melbourne, turning it into a brewery, bar and restaurant. Expansion has continued to South Wharf, with The General Assembly.

The large industrial space puts the bar in focus. It takes centre stage in the middle of the hall with communal seating off to the sides. There are three Duo Tanks over the main bar, which serves unpasteurised Carlton Draught Beer. Head Brewer Scott Vincent continues to lead the brewing team with flair as he kicks on with the original mission from 1984.
