Nestling on the slopes of Blencathra, 6 miles from Keswick and with spectacular views across the central fells, Scales Farm offers quality accommodation and a superb location to explore the Lake District.
The 17th century farmhouse features a welcoming traditional beamed lounge with a wood-burning stove and breakfast room available to customers at all times, ample private parking, secure bicycle storage and drying room.
All our bedrooms are en-suite with TV/DVD/DAB, WiFi, fridge and tea/coffee making facilities. We have one room suitable for our mobility impaired guests. Three of our six rooms are dog friendly with direct access to the garden and our own paddock.
Breakfast includes a buffet, Full English Breakfast or alternatives. Packed lunches provided on request.
Scales Farm is an ideal location, with many classic walks and the coast to coast cycle path accessible from our front door.
We offer six good sized bedrooms comfortably and tastefully furnished (three with ground floor outside access), of which three are double rooms, one double/twin room, a family room and a double/twin - graded as mobility 1.
Arrival
- We ask all guests to let us know when they expect to arrive so that we can be here to greet you.
- We have our own private car park.
- The X4 and X5 buses stop on the A66 at the end of the access road that leads to Scales Farm.
- Penrith is our nearest rail station and we can arrange transport if you let us know beforehand.
- We are always happy to assist guests with their luggage.
Main Entrance
- The main entrance can be reached from the private car park, up slight slope and along a level path, or up a flight of three stone stairs 220mm high, 290mm deep and 1300mm wide.
- One step 110mm high into porch.
- The front door is usually locked and a doorbell is available.
- The front door is approx 810mm in width.
Guest Lounge
- The inner porch door into walkway in lounge is 820mm wide.
- One step into lounge area is 155mm high.
- Reception is in the guest lounge.
- The lounge has flat screen TV with DVD player.
- There are two settees.
- Furniture can be moved to accommodate wheelchairs.
- We have a wood burning stove which is lit during winter months.
- There is a supply of books, maps and magazines.
- Door from lounge to dining Room is down a step 115mm high, with a handrail on the left, followed by slight slope. The doorway is 715mm approx wide.
Dining Room
- Reached through separate guest entrance door 760mm wide.
- Breakfast is served in the dining room
- Furniture is flexible to suit guests requirements.
- A breakfast menu is issued on arrival and in room for second and subsequent days' breakfasts.
- We do our best to cater for all tastes and needs, but please let us know if you have any particular requirements.
Public Areas
- All the floor areas on stairs, hallways and bedrooms have carpets or wooden floors.
- There is one separate WC situated outside opposite the guest entrance.
- There is secure bicycle storage.
Car Park
- There is a tarmac ramp into car park, which is slightly sloping and is laid with slate chippings.
- The parking for the mobility room is laid which paving blocks.
- The car park can accommodate up to 7 cars.
- There is a flat laid path to all three downstairs bedroom doors and the guest entrances.
Restaurants
- We are happy to advise on local restaurants to suit differing tastes and requirements. We ask that guests advise on their experiences so that other guests may benefit. We are always happy to make bookings for guests if required.
Laundry
- We offer drying facilities for wet clothing and provide an iron if required.
- We do not normally offer laundry facilities.
Leisure Facilities and Places to Visit
- A collection of leaflets is available and we are happy to advise on other attractions in the area.
Bedrooms
- We have a total of six bedrooms, three on the ground floor and three on the first floor.
- All rooms have central heating radiators with temperature control valves.
- All rooms are carpeted.
- Complementary tea and coffee making facilities are provided.
- All rooms have a small fridge.
- All rooms have digital televisions with DVD players and remote control.
- A cot can be provided in rooms 3,4,5 and 6.
Ground Floor Bedrooms
- The entrances to all ground floor bedrooms is from the car park.
Room 1
- The entrance is up two steps the first 170mm high, the second 90mm high through two inward opening doors with widths of 675mm.
- One king size bed.
- The bed is approximately 550mm in height.
- At least 600mm access between bed and furniture.
- Furniture can be moved on request.
- Two upholstered chairs are provided.
- En-suite Bathroom with a bath with shower over, basin and WC, door width 660mm.
- Dogs are allowed into this room.
Room 2
- The entrance is up two steps the first 170mm high, the second 90mm high through two doors the first is an outward opening stable door and the second inward opening with a width of 685mm. There is a further step into the room of 130mm.
- One double bed.
- The bed is approximately 560mm in height.
- At least 600mm access between bed and furniture.
- Furniture can be moved on request.
- Two upholstered chairs are provided.
- En-suite shower room with WC, basin and quadrant shower with sliding doors.
- Dogs are allowed into this room.
Room 3
- This room is classified as a mobility room "Mobility 1" but we find it suitable for wheelchair users, too.
- The entrance up a slope to an outward opening stable door 900mm wide followed by a further inward opening door of 815mm.
- Two single beds that can be made into a king size double bed.
- An extra single bed can be accommodated.
- The bed(s) are approximately 510mm in height.
- At least 600mm access between bed and furniture.
- Furniture can be moved on request.
- Two cane armchairs chairs are provided.
- Walk-in en-suite shower room has WC, basin, shower with curtain, grab handles and shower seat.
- Dogs are allowed into this room.
- There is direct wheelchair access to the dining room and on to the guest lounge, through two doors from the bedroom, width 870mm.
Guest Entrance
- This entrance gives access to first floor bedrooms, dining room and guest lounge. There is one step 160mm through inward opening door 740mm into a small hallway, with door to dining room and stairs to first floor.
First Floor Bedrooms
- The first floor bedrooms are reached either through the guest entrance width 740mm or from the guest lounge.
- There are 12 stairs to a landing leading to all three rooms.
- The stairs are 200mm high, 240mm deep and 750-800mm wide.
- The 10th and 11th steps are winders to the right. There is a banister on the right hand side.
- Door widths are 740mm.
Room 4
- King size four-poster bed and bunk beds.
- The height of the bed is approximately 550mm, the height of the two bunks are 410mm and 1180mm.
- At least 600mm access between beds and furniture.
- Furniture can be moved on request.
- A sofa and tub chair are provided.
