Humble House Restaurant Humble House Restaurant, 11 Church St, Brighton VIC 3186, Australia

Brighton's Humble House restaurant has plenty to boast about. Set over two levels, the restaurant is decorated in a lively and modern décor and offers a wide choice of Chinese dishes. The friendly and professional waiters can guide diners in choosing dishes and there is also a private dining room upstairs for private parties.

Welcome to my humble house, many Chinese say to welcome guests. But this particular modest place has much to boast about. It used to be a Thai restaurant which might explain its lively colours of strong green and purple. Yet it also has lots of Chinese accents in the decor and in the menu. It's an appealing place with a sense of professionalism and calm. It appears quite small at first, but there's an upstairs area upon closer inspection that doubles its size.

The menu is sizeable; if in doubt, choose one of the banquets from $35 a head. Otherwise, consider the wasabi prawns (coated in a green paste but not very hot), or perhaps the chicken or seafood san choy bau. House specials include Singapore-style chilli prawns, prawns in XO sauce, shredded beef in mandarin sauce, and lively Kung Po chicken or prawns (with dry chilli and peanuts). Want to feel healthy? Go for bean curd with Chinese mushrooms and bok choy, or fish with black bean sauce. It's all extremely well cooked and presented. A nice touch is that the plates vary throughout the meal, as they do in Japanese food presentation. The $18 lunch is great value, but don't let it stop you trying the full extent of the menu. The waiters are professional, helpful, and friendly and there is the option of takeaway as well.
