The quest for fantastic Thai cuisine makes an abrupt stop in Chermside at Thai Ayuthaya Restaurant. Here the flavours are rich and authentic, the staff obliging and the decor suited to a modern Asian palace. The Ayuthaya Special – grilled barbecue king prawns, scallops and mixed vegetables in a sweet tamarind sauce – is a definite standout.
A Thai tressure trove, this suburban restaurant has locals going the distance to enjoy incredible authentic Thai. The atmosphere oozes an oriental feel – the staff are adorned in traditional dress and the decor could easily fit a modern Asian palace. But really it's the food that captures the hearts of patrons with all of the flavours – coriander, chilli, citrus, garlic – that Australian palates have come to adore from Thai fare. The menu overflows with the token favourites as well as tempting creations for the more adventurous. Appetisers to be enjoyed include satay chicken and coconut prawns, the latter of which comes delicately battered in slivers of coconut. There is an excellent variety of stir-fries, rainbows of vivid colour: fire red chillies, golden yellow peepers and orange carrot wok-ed up with Thai favourites such as sweet sour sauce, garlic and ginger marinade or oyster sauce.
Authentic curries, green, red, yellow, or panang, are served with a choice of meat, seafood, poultry or tofu and steaming hot bowls of rice. One standout choice is an incredible jungle curry, which is richly spiced, amazingly pungent and endowed with the fiery heat that curry-ordering guests come to expect. The more outlandish options include a grilled snapper with lemongrass and crunchy cashews, a vegetable stir-fry with pumpkin, mushrooms and tofu and the Ayuthaya special – fresh barbecued grilled king prawns and scallops with mixed vegetables in a Thai sweet tamarind sauce.
