Accessible Rooms & Bathrooms / Accessibility

The 105 rooms, most with views of harbour or sea (marigold harbour sunsets are fantastic), aren’t snug hideaways; they’re functional and modern. Inclusions vary by room type but can feature wooden desks, coffee tables, armchairs and sofas. Pillow-stacked beds are comfortable. Colour schemes range from greens and redwood brown to sky blue and white. Some have balconies with table and chairs. Carpets are again an issue; durability seems to have won against softness. Tiled bathrooms with speckled countertops seem clean, and all have shower baths.

Ramp access to the ground floor, which includes the terrace, bar and restaurant. Lifts are available to the first and second floors. No rooms are specifically adapted for disabled guests, although there are a limited number of bath lifts.

Public Areas / Dining

The restaurant’s small menu changes each day. It’s traditional and won’t set the world on fire, working best when it’s classic British cuisine — goat cheese panna cotta was disappointing; striploin of beef with horseradish mash followed by black forest trifle was good. Charm comes from Madeira-born restaurant manager Joseph Martins, who buzzes around talking to each table. For casual dining, the terrace menu offers open sandwiches, seafood and pizzas. Breakfast is an all-you-can-eat buffet affair for both hot and cold food.
