Introduction / Description
The Residenza San Paolo VI, established on the premises of an Augustinian Monastery, was inaugurated at the beginning of the Holy Year 2000.
The genius loci and the charm of tradition, still alive in its ancient walls, make this property your “private” haven in Rome, far away from chaos, in the pulsing heart of the Eternal City.
Rome has many hotels, but only one of them is located directly on St. Peter’s Square (Vatican): Residenza San Paolo VI, the ideal place for those wishing to stay in the heart of Christendom, close to St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Grottoes, the Necropolis, St Peter’s and Saint John Paul II’s tombs, the Vatican Gardens and St. Angel’s Castle. Walking along the Vatican Wall, it’s easy to reach the Vatican Museums and visit the famous Sistine Chapel. Furthermore, some of our rooms offer special view of the Holy Office or of the internal courtyard of the ancient monastery or even of St. Peter’s Dome. From our magnificent Terrace it is possible to admire up close St. Peter’s Basilica and the Apostolic Palace, exactly where the Holy Father Pope Francis appears to bless the faithful and to recite the Sunday Angelus.
This makes our house a unique “home from home” for visitors to Rome who want something entirely different, and explains why connoisseurs recommend it to their closest friends.
Our “Beletage” with six Deluxe-Superior Rooms and one Suite, divided in living room and bedroom is located on the second floor of the building. The names of the rooms, inspired by the greatest Italian artist such as Michelangelo and Bernini, give you an idee of the elegance and tastefulness of the furniture, designed right down to the smallest details. Highest comfort combined with the appropriate privacy make you feel at home in the heart of the Vatican.
Aside from the hotel’s location, the biggest draw is the rooftop terrace, offering panoramic views of Vatican City, and daily bar service that starts in the afternoon. The busiest days here are Wednesdays and Sundays, when the Papal audiences and Angelus take place. Guests can get an unobstructed view of jam-packed St. Peter’s Square from the terrace, and the hotel offers free tickets for the audiences. However, the deck area closest to the square is fenced-off except during public appearances of the Pope, and some parts of the square can only be seen at specific times. The hotel serves light lunch on Wednesdays and brunch on Sundays on the terrace after the Papal events in the warmer seasons, but otherwise doesn't offer lunch or dinner. Free breakfast takes place in an elegant room with offerings that include Italian meats and cheeses, breads, cereal, coffee, and juice. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. The hotel also offers freebies on arrival that can include welcome fruit platters and cocktails. Airport transfer services can be booked at the front desk and the hotel can provide assistance with tickets to Papal events as well as guided tours (for a fee).
Accessible Rooms & Bathrooms / Accessibility
With only 35 rooms, the Residenza Paolo VI is a small boutique hotel of the new generation, with a pleasant warm atmosphere and a friendly personal service.
Our house offers French bed rooms, double rooms and triple rooms.
For a more comfortable stay we recommend to book our deluxe rooms.
Who instead is looking for an exclusive accommodation with stile, our elegant Junior Suites with spectacular view to the Dome of St. Peter’s (Vatican) are offering the ideal set.
On the second floor of the building, we have created a new room category, the “Deluxe Superior rooms”. The 6 rooms, located on our “Beletage” (Piano Nobile), with a separate entrance, are very quiet and facing to the courtyard.
The hotel has 35 compact rooms, all equipped with flat-screen TVs, minibars, air-conditioning, safes, and free Wi-Fi. Delicate wall moldings, ornate wooden furniture, and paintings of Vatican architecture add a classical charm to most rooms. Many rooms -- like the Maderno Deluxe Room that we saw -- have sharp touches like antique night stands and padded headboards. Standard Rooms are a little spartan, though, with just two twins or a double bed, plain wooden furniture, and mostly bare walls. These have just enough space for the bed, a closet, and either a small desk or two bedside tables. Junior Suites are the largest and most appealing option, with a small seating area with two armchairs and a coffee table, antique-style furniture, wooden floors, chandeliers, and intricately patterned area rugs. Bathrooms are variable as well. Some are basic or dated -- like the Junior Suite bathroom with slightly discolored grout between tilework -- while Standard Rooms have sharp modern bathrooms with gleaming white tiles, shower stalls, and rainfall showerheads. Guests seeking extra-quiet accommodations should consider the six courtyard-facing Deluxe Superior Rooms, which have a separate entrance on the second floor.
