The idea for the "Mar y Sol" project in Tenerife originated in 1975. Mr. Fischer used to spend his holidays with his wife in Los Cristianos, at that time a small fishing-village. His wife suffered from Multiple Sclerosis and Mr. Fischer noted the marked benefit that the local climate had upon her condition. and therefore conceived the idea of creating a holiday resort for people with MS and a host of other neurological and rheumatic conditions. It proved a long and difficult path to bring this concept to fruition. Mr. Fischer resigned his executive position at a German energy company, taking a leap of faith to create a holiday resort for the disabled and their families. He persevered with this project even when his wife sadly died. The Mar y Sol Hotel was inaugurated in 1990. Since 1995 Mr. Fischer has lived in Tenerife with his second wife, Mrs. Elli Baum-Fischer, and his two children Ina and Thomas, and he continues to manage the hotel resort.

The accessible spa hotel Mar y Sol is located in the southwest of Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands. Three further companies are associated with the hotel: the Centre for Prevention and Rehabilitation Teralava, the Diving Centre Mar y Sol Aquasport and the Disability Service Station  LeRo.

The construction of the Mar y Sol reflects authentic Spanish-style architecture. It is built on two and in places three levels, and is accessible throughout by lifts. The few steps you come across within the complex can be avoided using the existing ramps.

The Mar y Sol is situated approximately 400m away from the 8 km long sea-promenade and is constructed on slightly elevated ground and built on different levels around an impressive pool area.

Because the way down to the sea is sloping, it is very easy to reach the beach and the centre of town. Returning to the hotel may present problems for guests with restricted mobility but this can be overcome by using either an electric wheelchair or the local taxi service.
