When it comes to the mellow, warm and character-filled Manly restaurant, Jah Bah, what you see is what you get – a traditional Spanish tapas menu and a broad selection of well-travelled wine in a relaxed, fun environment.
No freezers; no frozen stuff. No pretence; no pretentiousness. When it comes to one of Manly's more recent additions, Jah Bar (which is due to celebrate its first birthday soon), what you see is very much what you get. And what you see is a warm, embracing place with touches of Spain evident in lamps, cushions, ornaments, screens and furniture. What you also see is a large, unashamedly-open kitchen/bar and a team of chefs who bustle about preparing delicious tapas fresh on the premises from ingredients that are sourced daily from the market. Although lovers of the outdoors might prefer to view the pot plants and large umbrellas of the restaurant's outdoor courtyard instead.
On the menu you will see a seasonal selection of traditional Spanish tapas. There is (of course) paella which in the summer time takes on a chorizo, saffron and seafood mein but changes slightly with the seasons and available produce, as well as jamon Serrano, chorizo and patatas bravas (baby potatoes topped with spicy tomato sauce). The menu also deviates a little from tradition with dishes like confit pork belly with house-made quince paste pinchos with shaven fennel and Basque-style calamari with saffron aioli and lime. Churros (Spanish doughnuts) served on sticks and served with hot dipping chocolate complete the Jah Bar experience. If the weather's too hot, you might like to opt for affogato made with Pedro Ximenez sweet sherry and espresso. Speaking of drinks, Jah Bar has a very impressive, and very well-travelled, wine list. Spanning from local and near-local Australian and New Zealand wines to varieties from France, Argentina and even Chile (with most available by the glass) it is a haven for adventurous wine connoisseurs.
