When you want hearty, generous meals with a three-litre stein and token German decor for company, take a drive to Terrey Hills where Kaiser Stub'n Restaurant will happily cater to every schnitzel-and-beer-loving whim. Do not come here if you're on a diet, this is the domain of starters like crackling pork belly dumplings, stuffed mushrooms, liver pate and hearty soups.
Sometimes you want to forgo white-set tables, crystal and meals that could feed an ant if it weren't particularly hungry, and head for something a little heartier. That's what Kaiser Stub'n was designed for. This German-Austrian restaurant throws brick walls, taxidermy, waiters in traditional outfits and robust menus together with a gusto that'll make you shout "I'll have a three-litre stein, bitte". The atmosphere is embracing and the waiters talk in the manner of long-lost relatives with fantastic German accents – relatives only too happy to stuff you silly with food and drink.
Be happy about this. Kaiser Stub'n boasts a hearty collection of European beers (alongside token standards) as well as a modest selection of wine by the glass and bottle and a few specialties like schnapps, mulled wine (in winter) and cider (great for hot days). The real draw card, however, is the food. Do not come here if you're on a diet, this is the domain of starters like crackling pork belly dumplings, stuffed mushrooms, liver pate and hearty soups. Mains bring on schnitzels, pork knuckles, cordon blues, roasted duck and – for the brave diner – "the wheelbarrow". As the name suggests, this dish is carted to your table in a little wooden wheelbarrow and filled with every German delicacy possible – sausages, schnitzels, bread dumplings, sauerkraut and more. I will tip my hat if you can finish it and still glance at the dessert menu. If you do, dig your way through favourites like creme brulee, apple strudel and vanilla ice-cream served with various hot and cold toppings. Then again, you might just want to take the waiter's suggestion and finish with schnapps.
