After its success in Surry Hills, it's no wonder Matt Yazbek, founder of Toko, opened a spinoff restaurant at Circular Quay -- Tokonoma. Set into the space underneath the iconic Bridge Room, Tokonoma brings Izakaya dining to the harbourside, with signature Japanese dishes on offer, including fabulous sushi made with tuna, bug and venison. The dining room itself is a work of art; its walls adorned with murals by Ando Hiroshige.

The Japanese word ‘Tokonoma’ means the focal point and spiritual centre of the Japanese house. An abbreviated translation is ‘the pinnacle.’ Tokonoma by Toko represents the pinnacle of cuisine, produce, beverage, design and service.

Our chefs take great pride in the celebration of shun – a Japanese word used to describe seasonal food at its peak of ripeness, flavour and nutrients. This philosophy is at the core of Tokonoma by Toko’s Japanese dining experience.

Tokonoma by Toko’s semi-subterranean location creates an atmosphere unique amongst Sydney venues. The dining configuration is thoughtfully spaced, affording intimate and confidential lunch and dinner conversation. An exposed kitchen and long, inviting bar hints at New York sophistication; supplemented by a discerning, seasonally changing beverage offering that is so clever it may well trigger the return of the long lunch.
