Bottega Restaurant Bottega Restaurant, 74 Bourke St, Melbourne VIC 3000, Australia

In the midst of one of Melbourne's most popular dining precincts, Bottega has both survived and prospered. This inviting Italian restaurant presents inventive and sophisticated modern Italian flavours with equally sophisticated prices. The restaurant welcomes diners to relax and sink into plush leather seats set beneath soft teardrop lights. A great spot for a pre-theatre dinner, or skip the show and order another glass of vino. Bottega is like a handsome Italian man; chocolate hues, golden glow and smartly dressed. The sophisticated ambiance has made it a popular haunt for CBD diners and theatre lovers, eager to indulge in a little vino at lunchtime or prior to catching a show at the Princess.

The modern Italian menu is the work of Gabriele Oliveri, who was raised on the Adriatic coast in Cattolica. He brings to the kitchen a wealth of international experience yet always manages to pay homage to his native hometown. A dish of spoia lorda with a white hare ragu served with squaquerone, is a twist on a regional dish he grew up with. Handmade pastas are a strong feature of the menu, with ‘strozzapreti’ and ‘nidi di rondine’ taking a front seat. Dishes are complimented by a well-rounded wine list that features some bold Italian and Australian drops (the prices are even bolder). Given the location, the pre-theatre menu is incredibly popular, and it’s advisable to book ahead.
